Revealjs Starter
Where This Fits
This page explains how to use the slide starter shipped in your personal workspace at assignments/assignment08-communication/starter-slides.qmd. The copy in this course book is a reference; do not assume it appears in the same Explorer as your personal work.
You may also submit a structured slide outline for A8. Both options are graded identically — pick the format that fits where you are. The revealjs path is recommended if you want practice with Quarto slides before M5.
Copy, Then Render
The workspace starter is configured for its submitted location. Copy and rename it first using the steps below, then render the submitted slides.qmd; do not render or edit the untouched template in place.
Copy the Starter into Your A8 Folder
The starter stays in the weeks folder as a template. Your graded files belong in the assignment submission folder.
Before editing, copy assignments/assignment08-communication/starter-slides.qmd within your personal workspace into assignments/assignment08-communication/submission/ and rename it slides.qmd. Render from the repository root so the required slides.qmd and slides.html are created in the correct folder.
Step by step in VS Code:
- In your personal workspace Explorer, open
assignments/assignment08-communication/, right-clickstarter-slides.qmd, and choose Copy. - Right-click the
assignments/assignment08-communication/submission/folder and choose Paste. - Right-click the pasted copy, choose Rename, and type
slides.qmd. - Edit
slides.qmdthere, then render it by name:
If you choose the outline path instead, name your file slide-outline.qmd in the same submission folder.
The Three-Slide Story
The starter uses three content slides:
- Question and audience: who needs the result and why.
- Evidence: one plot, table, or dashboard output.
- Limitation and next step: what the result does not prove and what the audience should do next.
For A8, 3-5 slides is enough. A short, honest deck is better than a long deck full of weak claims.
Add Evidence
You can add evidence in three ways:
- insert a figure exported from A5;
- copy a small table from A6;
- include a screenshot or preview of the A7 dashboard output if it does not expose row-level data.
Use relative paths for images. For example:
That example is relative to the A8 submission/ folder. If the path does not work, keep the figure beside your slide deck and use a local relative path such as:
Add a Source Note
The starter includes a citation to @cdc-nhanes. Keep a source note near the evidence slide. If you use your project dataset instead of the NHANES example, replace the source note with the source that matches your project.
Speaker Notes
Speaker notes are useful, but they are not a place to hide essential limitations. Put the key limitation on the slide or in a visible caption. Use notes for backup details such as cohort definition, package versions, or AI-use checks.
Before Submitting
Check that:
- the deck or outline renders;
- the main evidence is visible;
- the limitation is not hidden;
- the source note is present;
- the AI-use note says what AI helped with and what you checked.
