Example: M3 — Project Update
This is one worked example on the class NHANES dataset, written by a fictional group, to show the expected structure and depth of a good submission. Your project must use your own question, data, audience, and analysis — do not copy this text or these files. This example lives in the public book for learning; graders assess your original work.
Below is the Cedar Equity Lab group’s m3-project-update submission from the worked NHANES example. See the M3 brief for what is required.

AI-use note
AI helped propose a shorter ordering for the draft report and flagged two sentences as potentially causal. The group checked every displayed number against the rendered table, confirmed the CDC/NCHS citation in references.bib, reran the report and dashboard, and rewrote the interpretation to say descriptive, unweighted, and modest.

Dashboard preview
- Current source:
dashboard/dashboard.qmd - Rendered preview:
dashboard/dashboard.html - Intended audience: municipal public-health staff preparing an internal health-equity briefing
- Feature: change the single
selected_incomevalue and re-render to update the table, title, and cycle plot - Limitation/privacy caution: the page shows aggregate, unweighted classroom summaries only; it does not expose row-level data or support causal or national-population claims

Feedback request
Please focus on these questions:
- Correctness: Do the complete-case counts in the report agree with the table and figure?
- Interpretation: Is the difference described as modest and descriptive, without implying causality or national representation?
- Visual clarity: Does the cycle figure make the small group difference understandable without exaggerating it?
- Reproducibility: Are the root render commands and data path clear enough to follow in a fresh Codespace?
- Audience fit: Would a municipal public-health briefing team understand what question this result should prompt next?

Project update
- Current title: Income and BMI Patterns in NHANES Adults
- Audience: Municipal public-health staff preparing an internal health-equity briefing
- Refined primary question: How does mean BMI differ across income groups among adults age 20-80 in the prepared classroom dataset?
- Data and sample: Cached CDC/NCHS NHANES-derived classroom CSV; 57,137 adult rows before missing BMI and income-group exclusions
- Stable finding: Mean BMI is about 28.6 in the high-income group, 29.4 in the low-income group, and 29.3 in the middle-income group in the complete adult records.
- Choice needing review: Does the cycle-by-income figure help the audience understand the small difference without making it look more important than it is?
- Next steps: Apply peer feedback, align the dashboard wording with the report, complete a fresh-environment render, and turn the story into M5 slides.

Reproducibility note
From the project root in the course Codespace, run quarto render milestones/m3-project-update/submission/report-draft.qmd and quarto render dashboard/dashboard.qmd. Both sources load the committed CSV at data/nhanes_equity_v6.csv using a relative path and require only tidyverse and knitr. The current renders completed without a manual data or path step.
