WarningIllustrative example — do not copy

This is one worked example on the class NHANES dataset, written by a fictional group, to show the expected structure and depth of a good submission. Your project must use your own question, data, audience, and analysis — do not copy this text or these files. This example lives in the public book for learning; graders assess your original work.

Below is the Cedar Equity Lab group’s m5-presentation submission from the worked NHANES example. See the Presentation brief for what is required.

AI-use note

AI suggested shorter slide titles and identified jargon in the first draft. The group checked the 57,137 cohort count, missingness values, three displayed means, figure labels, and source note against the final report and rendered slides. We rejected a suggested phrase that implied income predicted BMI.

Peer feedback received on the NHANES project

This is inward-facing feedback on our NHANES project. It is separate from the outward-facing M4 review we wrote about the Northside Active Living project.

  • Source: River Health Team’s review of our M3 report and KT preview.
  • Feedback received: Say explicitly that the overall difference is small; use “Average BMI (kg/m²)” rather than “Mean BMI” in the audience-facing dashboard; and keep the unweighted limitation beside the figure.
  • Changes made: We added “modest/small” to the report and slides, expanded the dashboard label and units, and placed the descriptive/unweighted caution in the dashboard figure caption and limitation section.
  • Suggestion not adopted: The reviewers suggested a second dashboard control for age range. We kept one income-group control because the current audience question is answered without added complexity.

Source and limitations note

  • Source: Prepared classroom snapshot derived from CDC/NCHS National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey public-use files; https://wwwn.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/
  • Inclusion/exclusion: Ages 20-80 inclusive; grouped results use non-missing age, BMI, and income group; cycle figure also requires a non-missing cycle
  • Claim type: Descriptive and unweighted, not predictive or causal
  • Privacy/stewardship caution: Show aggregate results only, avoid stigmatizing income groups, and do not upload row-level records to AI tools
  • Limitation to say aloud: The analysis does not use the NHANES survey design and is not a national estimate
