Git Progress

Commit The Audit Trail

Week 4 introduced Git as analysis provenance. Week 5 uses that skill to make translation auditable.

Commit after meaningful checkpoints:

  1. R pipeline works.
  2. R function reproduces the pipeline.
  3. Python notebook loads the same data.
  4. Python summary matches the R summary.
  5. Final parity note is complete.

Notebook Output Hygiene

Jupyter notebooks can store rendered tables and images inside the .ipynb file. That makes Git diffs noisy.

Before committing:

  1. Open the Command Palette with Ctrl+Shift+P.
  2. Run Notebook: Clear All Outputs.
  3. Save the notebook.
  4. Stage translation.ipynb, helpers.py, and your Quarto note together.

Example Commit Messages

Add R BMI summary for Week 5 parity check
Translate BMI summary to pandas and verify row counts
Complete Assignment 4 parity audit note

Student Check

Your Git history should show the work developing in steps, not one unexplained final upload.
